This week the world celebrated International Women’s Day, an acknowledgement of the impact of women in all fields of life.
On the homefront, Sydney DJ, radio presenter and editor Caitlin Medcalf is making her own contribution to the women’s movement, celebrating females in the music scene.
Through her website, Pretty Broad, and one-hour radio show, Purple Sneakers on FBi 94.5, Caitlin is giving exposure to female and gender non-conforming artists in electronic music “who otherwise may not get the attention they deserve”.
She sees an imbalance in the Australian media, where she says more than two-thirds of air time is devoted to male musicians. So it is Caitlin’s goal to break through the “boys club” and promote the diversity and strong presence of women in electronic music.
“At the end of the day, if I can get one more person out there to be aware of another producer that they may not have heard of before, that’s all I want,” she tells Hatch in this video filmed and produced by Montana Duncan.
